The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently released some startling reports regarding the rate of stolen construction equipment in the United States. Across the United States, there is a 5% increase in stolen construction vehicles from last year. As a result, there are hundreds of millions of dollars worth of machinery losses that the construction industry has to deal with. However, it seems that some cities are more prone to crime. The same report said that Houston, which saw a 22% increase in stolen heavy machinery, is the most dangerous city for construction vehicles. More machines are subject to theft in Houston than in any other US city. Other dangerous cities rounding the list include Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Miami, West Palm Beach and San Diego.
There is a reason that most of the stole equipment occurs in the South: because it is closer to the US-Mexican border. Most of the stole machines go to Mexico. Some of the thefts occur while a business is shipping heavy machinery. This is something to speak about with your trusted freight forwarder during your next transportation discussion.
Only about 1 in 5 machines are ever recovered. To help recover more stolen machines, it would be wise for the industry to finally invest in tracking devices. Most modern construction vehicles lack tracking devices. If these vehicles were to have tracking devices installed, then more of them will be recovered. Hopefully, your machines are not subject to theft, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Install the tracking device before it is too late.
